   When it comes to hawker food, there will always be a rivalry in between Malaysia and Singapore. I have heard people from both countries fighting over who has the best char koay teow or cendol. Not taking any sides, i believe both places have their own specialties, in their own unique ways. Today, while i was going through some of my old photos, i realised that i accidentally forgot about this piece of write up about Singapore's famous Laksa and Prawn Noodle. Let's go back to few months ago when i paid the Lion City a visit.

   It's the beginning of the week again, i'm sure everyone out there is working their best to fight away Monday blue right? Well, the blues is unnecessary when you have a cuppa good caffeine. I'm talking about coffee and tea i had during my last Singapore trip. This post is specially for my SG friends as well as those who are going to visit SG soon. Enjoy~

Lola's Cafe, Kovan

   Lola's cafe is on my SG cafe list. We were quite reluctant to visit here at first because of its location in Kovan which is very far away from where we stayed. Nevertheless, the consistent online review finally won us over, and i took around an hour, approximately 20 MRT stations to bring me here. The journey was all worth while when we had a taste of their menu.



   Lola's Cafe is located in a friendly, quiet housing neighbourhood. We took around 15 minutes to walk from the Kovan MRT station. The space is limited, packed with customers, i advise you to come a little bit early than 11am to avoid long waiting time. Lola's Cafe offered the typical brunch menu, along with some fancy looking desserts. We ordered an Eggs Benedict, a Sea Salt Chocolate Tart with Coffee Cream as well as a cup of Cappucino to share.

      There was basically nothing wrong with the Eggs Benedict that we had. We got the perfectly poached eggs with the right texture, a light Hollandaise sauce on a crsipy yet soft toast. The only thing i wish could be better is the portion of the dish. I would recommend a bigger serving for the price the customers are paying. Another delightful find was the Chocolate Tart which redefine the meaning of heavenly matched ingredients. Sweet and salty goes together perfectly in this dessert. We got the sweetness from the chocolate mousse and the saltiness from the sea salt which is not overwhelming at all. Coffee was good and balanced, possibly the best i have tried in SG.

      Good food, delicious desserts, great coffee and reasonable price. Lola's Cafe is here to stay in the SG neighbourhood. I would recommend this cafe to all who loves good quality brunch and desserts.

High Society, Marina Bay Sands

   Yes! This is basically the front view of the shop and what drew us into at the first place. I was strolling the shops around Marina Bay Sands with Cousie Caryn and we stumbled upon this desserts place filled with visually appealing sweet treats! Without further thinking, we got in and ordered a number of sweets with some tea while resting our feet.

   I guess from this you would know, us girls are weak when it comes to desserts. I truly enjoyed our afternoon tea session that day, mainly due to the classy, quiet and elegant ambiance. Service was spectacular and their tea collection was fine and quality. The desserts had some hits and misses. I love all our macarons, which have the right texture, consistency and flavors. However, the red velvet cupcake was too dry and tasted flat; strawberry cheese cake was ordinary and not memorable. I would recommend this place purely for its dining environment and macarons.

   If you notice, soft serve ice-cream has becoming one of the latest trending dessert around. It is basically a type of ice-cream with softer texture, because of the introduction of air into the mixture during freezing. If you haven't try one yet, this kind of ice-cream is something close to MacDonald's sundae, but every shop's version is slightly different. My first encounter with soft serve other than McD's was Milk Cow, Mid Valley but i wasn't impressed by it at all. However, these 3 soft serve ice-cream dessert shops that i'm writing today had definitely changed my mind on soft serve.

Via Tokyo, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong

Matcha Soft Serve--HKD 32

   Soft, smooth, rich and bitter sweet would be the best descriptive terms for this wonderful dessert. Comparing to the other matcha ice-cream i had in the past, Via Tokyo's version is way much richer, strong in its matcha flavor and creamy at the same time. This would be fantastic for all the matcha lovers out there. They also serve royal milk tea and genmaicha soft serve as well, but they were not available when i went there. If you ever visit HK, please head on to this shop early, if you want to try out these unique flavors!

   Comparing to Milk Cow's, i definitely would prefer Honey Creme's milky soft serve. It was supremely smooth and filled with dairy's goodness. The other component, organic honey was also delightful on the palate. It was perfectly sweetened with natural ingredients and the honey comb was crumbly and filled with generous amount of silky honey. Both the items above were great for those who do not fancy diabetic desserts.

Softsrve, Damansara Utama

   Last but not least, we have our own Malaysian owned soft serve dessert shop in PJ Uptown as well. Although it has only been operating for less than a year, its popularity in Klang Valley is undeniably high. As a die hard desserts fan, i have got to try this out myself to blend in right? Located in the hub of Damansara Uptown, same row as The Good Batch, Softsrve is not easily missed, though parking can be a headache to many.

Menu

    Softsrve's menu is fairly simple. They offer 3 categories of soft serve flavors: Cereal Milk, Deep Chocolate and Salted Butterscotch. Hence, there is something for everyone, aimed to please the taste buds for all. I decided to go with cereal milk, with 'Breakfast' as topping, because this is the best seller combination here in Softsrve.

Cereal Milk+Breakfast--RM 11 Cereal milk soft serve, made with milk and cereals, topped with cereal flakes and strawberry slices.

    Cereal milk to me, supposed to taste like milk with plenty of cereal within. However, the cereal was too fine and lacked of pleasant texture within. The milk flavor was not substantial enough as well. If i were to close my eyes and taste both the Cereal Milk soft serve and McD's vanilla sundae, i wouldn't know the difference at all! However, it is definitely an eye-catcher, attention-seeking and Instagram-worthy soft serve because of the amazing visual effect you get from dry ice popping with fumes. Personally, i find it over-rated and definitely overpriced. Perhaps i should try out the other flavours like chocolate churros to find out the specialty with Softsrve.

   That's it! All 3 soft serve desserts shops in a row, from 3 different countries! I hope you are tempted by me to purchase a soft and creamy soft serve right now! Well, i am definitely craving for it right now. I guess my best choice would be McD's because it is near and cheap and why not? McD's sundae are great!    Why dear Malaysia?? Why you keep pouring non stop nowadays? You made my little feet so cold and hungry all the time! How i wish to have a small bowl of warm, soupy dish to bring some warmth into the house! Starting to miss the awesome food i had during my trip to Singapore 2 months ago! Scrolling through my photo albums, i realised i must share these 2 Singapore restaurants with you that offer goody and heart-warming food to you! Enjoy~



   Okay, i know whatchu thinking right now! *insert smirk face LOL. People always have a misconception about this area in Singapore. Yes, i know it's well known for its red light district but Geylang has more to offer other than that! As a trusty tour guide, Cousie Caryn brought me to Geylang to have a spontaneous late night supper after strolling our feet off at Orchard. It is a little bit tricky to locate as Geylang is considered as an old and busy area, especially at night. We took a bus from Orchard, but i'm sure you can assess to this place by any form of transportation as Singapore's system is very extensive and convenient.

   Cousie Caryn highly recommended these dishes as these are always her favourite food for supper! We had a bowl of plain claypot porridge with a claypot Gong Pow Frog as well as Oyster Omelette (Ohh Jian) as appetizer. All these are some of the must-have in the shop as it is famous for its claypot frog dishes. Other than that, they also offer a wide range of Chinese dishes to choose from.

     I have had a few frog porridge back in Malaysia and i have to say nothing impressed me more than this one i had in Geylang. I especially love the spiciness and caramalised after taste of the thick and rich sauce within a pot of goodness. Although i had to down a few bottles of water after that, i have no regret trying the insanely good claypot frog which is filled with so much flavours and goodness. Oyster omelette was quite different from the ones we have in Malaysia. Their version consists of more egg than flour. I would still go for Penang's version, my all time favourite in Oyster omelette.

   Nevertheless, Geylang Lor 9 Frog Porridge is a perfect supper spot for those night owls out there in Singapore! Girls, just beware and be prepared to gain some heightened attention from the guys around if you are dressed in a slightly skimpy manner! Just kidding!

   On the next day, for dinner, Cousie Caryn and i decided to try out this little Japanese ramen restaurant in Bugis Village after a day of shopping around the area. I actually did my homework before visiting Singapore and found out about this restaurant which is in trend among my friends circle. It is well known for its ramen soaked in a rich and thick broth, fulled or collagen goodness. As a hardcore foodie, i have to try it out myself!

    Hands up, this is the BEST RAMEN i have ever tasted in my life! Let's start with the broth, which i think is the most important element in a ramen dish. Tonkatsu's broth was thick and creamy, exploding with fish bone essence and collagen . It was smooth and fragrant, pleasant in the palate and released a luxurious aftertaste which elevated the whole dish to another level. To make things even better, the ramen's texture was cooked to perfection, slightly al dente; flavoured egg was flawlessly delicious and the melt-in-your-mouth pork slices were strictly unforgettable.

Green Tea Cola

   Alright, back to the topic. This restaurant's space is minimal and it can be jam packed during peak hours and customers had to queue for at least 20 minutes to get a seat. However, the turn over rate is quite high, you will be assure a table not long after. To locate it, this restaurant is situated on the Ground Floor of Bugis Village. If you are travelling from Bugis Junction or Bugis Plus, just take a left turn at the Bugis Village and it should be on your left. You can assess to Bugis by taking MRT to Bugis Station, as simple as that. I truly enjoyed by dining experience here and will definitely make a second visit whenever i return to Singapore!
