The Front Door & Random Finds in Petaling Street

21:53

Ohh no, i can't believe i nearly missed this write up. Mr. J brought me to this very well hidden cafe a month ago when my sweet holiday just started. It is none other than The Front Door at Jalan Sultan. I heard of it by its wonderful and innovative recreation of gourmet sandwich, hence i am more than excited to try them out! It is located on the same row as Coffee Amo, just a stone throw away from Petaling Street and Chinatown.

Judging from its Anglo-Chinese build up (something i learnt from Ms. Zheng), it used to be a grocery store before the development hits KL. Till today, it is still a house to Grocer's Inn, a backpack hotel and this hidden cafe. Parking could be a fuss here, i'll suggest you to park opposite of this cafe, there is a basement carpark. It costs a few bucks per hour, so i don't recommend you to stay long at this area.

As we stepped into this hut, i can't help but amazed by the rustic, casual destructed look. The undone brick wall, the cement floor and bar, simple wooden and metal furniture contribute to a cool ambiance in The Front Door. Their menu is simple, just a couple of gourmet sandwiches and some beverages. Order has to be made at the counter. We ordered a set of 5 sandwiches which we can freely choose from their sweet and savoury selection. We got a Pepperoni Cheese, Grilled Chicken, Smoked Salmon, Asparagus Mushroom and a Caramalised Banana with Peanut Butter as closing dessert. For our caffeine fix, i got a cup of Flat White while he got a cup of Hot Mocha.

Signature Toast 5--RM 25
Beef Pepperoni with Cheese
As simple as it looks, this toast is sinfully delicious. I love how well the cheese binds all the heat and meaty goodness together. Toast was crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside. Balance of flavors and texture was achieved.

Grilled Chicken with Caramalised Orange and Pesto Spread
I had high expectation for this as the combination is really unique but the dryness of the chicken completely shattered my hope. Pesto sauce was barely tasted and caramalised orange did not serve any purpose in this dish. It is a nay.

Smoked Salmon with Cucumber on Cream Cheese Spread
Smoked salmon and cream cheese, ahh, what an over-familiar combination right? Strangely, with just an addition of cucumber, this supposedly heavy and boring toast immediately became a refreshing and memorable one. No wonder the Japs love to put cucumber in all of their sushi. Thumbs up for this!

Poached Asparagus with Sauteed Mushroom and Hard Boiled Egg
This brunch-like-toast is also a good one but not entirely memorable. Presentation was good, but just something about that overcooked asparagus and bland mushroom pulled down the overall score. Nevertheless, it was a visual-appealing dish!

Caramalised Banana with Peanut Butter Spread
Last but not least, one must have dessert to end a meal right? We picked this dish despite being so overwhelmed by it already. I have to say, after trying this, i changed my mind. I love the caramalised sugar coating on the banana, giving a satisfying fragrant and flavor. Well, basically nothing much can go wrong with banana, sugar, cinnamon and peanut butter right?

Flat White--RM 9
Hot Mocha--RM 10

Coffee was alright. I mean a good brunch should go together with some good coffee right? I find my Flat White lacked of acidity and bitterness while Mr. J's Mocha has too much of chocolate powder, overpowering the coffee.

Meal of the day

I still couldn't decide which toast is my favourite, but overall, this gourmet toast thingy is something special that i think you should give it a try. It is instagram-friendly and visually appealing. The portion is small and overpriced. However, i do enjoy the tranquil environment this place offers. Every single setting here is so well thought and designed. From the convenient side cutleries placement to the thoughtful water glass on each table. This is certainly a great place for one to unwind and find peace in this busy heart of KL.

Next up, we went to Petaling Street for a stroll since yours truly haven't been to this place. Yea i know, such an embarrassment LOL. Just tried out some famous local food. I always think that Petaling Street is a dodgy area full of foreign workers but out of my surprise, it turned out to be better than that. Yes, it is packed with tourists from all over the world and food prices are over the sky due to popular demand and innocent tourists, Nevertheless, i am glad that we found some real good traditional food.

Lai Foong Beef Noodle
Corner lot @ Jalan Tun H.S. Lee
As i observed this middle aged uncle cooking so hard under the hot weather and boiling soups, i can't help but wonder why do they still insist in continuing the family business? Nowadays, to get rich, there is plenty of other easier routes but why insist in this traditional, hard core way to earn a living. Then i realised, it is not about the money or fame, it's all about preserving the family's legacy, protecting and hopefully promoting it so that this valuable and beautiful recipe and tradition will last longer. I really do appreciate their hard work and i sincerely urge the younger generation to take up this wonderful legacy, so that our children in the future get to taste some real good old traditional food that we once grew up with. xoxo
