#foodiehitstheroad: Working Title | Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee SG
22:11 Sigh, looking at my draft page, i have over 20 pending posts that i wanted to share with you guys but haven't gotten the time to do so! Sorry, peeps, i'll try to catch up on writing interesting update for you!! To begin with, i'll write about 2 cafes that i visited during Singapore trip!
1. Working Title, Arab Street
I think that was my second day in Singapore, when my dear cousie Ms. Caryn brought me around to visit her second home. I suggested to go to Haji Lane because i love arts and that is a recent hot spot for tourists as well. We bumped into Working Title after several attempt in finding other cafes which was closed or shut down. Nevertheless, Working Title was an enjoyable visit to us.
Working Title is situated below a backpacker hotel called The Shophouse, along Arab Street which is behind Haji Lane. It should be easy to locate because the lane is so short! I can't help but being mesmerised by the indie and hipster interior of this cafe. Every table and chair came from different sources and design. It is so messy but oddly beautiful at the same time. Distracted by the array of desserts showcased at the bar counter, we quickly made our choice--Horlicks Tart and a cup of cappuccino for sharing.

Cappuccino |
Horlicks is basically a popular local drink, malty and sweet. I find the flavor of Horlicks to be very prominent but delightful in this dessert. The pastry crust was soft and crumbly, works perfectly with the sweet and crunchy filling. On the other hand, coffee was a little bit disappointing because it lacked the espresso aroma and tasted rather bland to me.

2. Chye Seng Huat Hardware Coffee (CSHH)
On the next day, Mr. J dropped by and we visited CSHH for a cup of caffeine because internet has crowned it as one of the best cafe in Singapore. Woah, talking about CSHH, this is one headache for us to locate because it is situated in the old and tranquil neighbourhood, away from any main road or buildings. Thank God for some friendly locals who gave us the direction to it. You can assess to this cafe using cab or bus. For us, we used the MRT, and got down at Lavender station. After that, we gotta figure it ourselves how to reach CSHH.
How it looks on the outside |
My research found out that CSHH shared the same coffee bean origins as Pulp by Papa Palheta in Bangsar. Therefore, it must be as good as the one we have in Malaysia. After tasting, i would say that CSHH's version is smoother, cleaner and more fruity comparing to the one in Malaysia. It was strong in acidity, but lacked of the earthy flavors i longed in a cuppa. I still keep my reservation to label this as the best coffee in Singapore.
Coffee aside, i do appreciate CSHH's take on its design and setting. Something about this cafe that is so simple and ancient, intriguing customers to linger a little while more just to reminiscence and explore their childhood and memories once more. For that, CSHH had done a great job!
