Geylang Lor 9 Frog Porridge | Ramen Keisuke Tonkatsu King Four Seasons, Bugis Village

Why dear Malaysia?? Why you keep pouring non stop nowadays? You made my little feet so cold and hungry all the time! How i wish to have a small bowl of warm, soupy dish to bring some warmth into the house! Starting to miss the awesome food i had during my trip to Singapore 2 months ago! Scrolling through my photo albums, i realised i must share these 2 Singapore restaurants with you that offer goody and heart-warming food to you! Enjoy~

1. Geylang Lor 9 Frog Porridge

Okay, i know whatchu thinking right now! *insert smirk face LOL. People always have a misconception about this area in Singapore. Yes, i know it's well known for its red light district but Geylang has more to offer other than that! As a trusty tour guide, Cousie Caryn brought me to Geylang to have a spontaneous late night supper after strolling our feet off at Orchard. It is a little bit tricky to locate as Geylang is considered as an old and busy area, especially at night. We took a bus from Orchard, but i'm sure you can assess to this place by any form of transportation as Singapore's system is very extensive and convenient.

Cousie Caryn highly recommended these dishes as these are always her favourite food for supper! We had a bowl of plain claypot porridge with a claypot Gong Pow Frog as well as Oyster Omelette (Ohh Jian) as appetizer. All these are some of the must-have in the shop as it is famous for its claypot frog dishes. Other than that, they also offer a wide range of Chinese dishes to choose from.

I have had a few frog porridge back in Malaysia and i have to say nothing impressed me more than this one i had in Geylang. I especially love the spiciness and caramalised after taste of the thick and rich sauce within a pot of goodness. Although i had to down a few bottles of water after that, i have no regret trying the insanely good claypot frog which is filled with so much flavours and goodness. Oyster omelette was quite different from the ones we have in Malaysia. Their version consists of more egg than flour. I would still go for Penang's version, my all time favourite in Oyster omelette.

Nevertheless, Geylang Lor 9 Frog Porridge is a perfect supper spot for those night owls out there in Singapore! Girls, just beware and be prepared to gain some heightened attention from the guys around if you are dressed in a slightly skimpy manner! Just kidding!

2. Ramen Keisuke Tonkatsu Four Seasons, Bugis Village

On the next day, for dinner, Cousie Caryn and i decided to try out this little Japanese ramen restaurant in Bugis Village after a day of shopping around the area. I actually did my homework before visiting Singapore and found out about this restaurant which is in trend among my friends circle. It is well known for its ramen soaked in a rich and thick broth, fulled or collagen goodness. As a hardcore foodie, i have to try it out myself!

Small and cozy Japanese style restaurant
Ramen Keisuke Tonkatsu King Four Season is actually the brainchild of Chef Keisuke Takeda, from Hiroshima, Japan. It is one of the sisters from the famous Keisuke Japanese chain shops, together with other popular places such as Tonkotsu King, Tori King, Gyoza King and more, spreading out furiously in Singapore. Chef Keisuke's creation of his perfect miso broth is the spark where everything began. In this particular branch, his focus will be mainly the 4 seasons flavored ramen: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The menu was smartly designed with simplicity and customer-centered. By providing only 4 main attraction, customers can easily pick their items. At the same time, the restaurant offers a great flexibility to customers in selecting their preference over noodle type, saltiness and side dishes to go with the ramen.

For us, we decided to go with Tonkatsu Ramen Autumn set, that comes with a flavoured egg. You can also opt for the just ramen set or the ramen+flavoured egg+all toppings. The Autumn set is a bowl of Japanese ramen, soaked in the in house specialty miso broth, with minced pork, bonitos and fried mixed mushroom. The key item here is definitely bonitos that reminds me off autumn. Besides, some side dishes are complimentary such as the white and black sesame seeds, bean sprouts with sesame oil, hard boiled egg that are available on the tables. For drinks, we ordered a bottle of green tea cola which sounded really cool to me!

Hands up, this is the BEST RAMEN i have ever tasted in my life! Let's start with the broth, which i think is the most important element in a ramen dish. Tonkatsu's broth was thick and creamy, exploding with fish bone essence and collagen . It was smooth and fragrant, pleasant in the palate and released a luxurious aftertaste which elevated the whole dish to another level. To make things even better, the ramen's texture was cooked to perfection, slightly al dente; flavoured egg was flawlessly delicious and the melt-in-your-mouth pork slices were strictly unforgettable.

One point that i really appreciate from my visit here is seeing all these experienced, elderly chefs, working so hard under the heat just to produce a bowl of comforting ramen for their customers to enjoy. As i sat at the ramen bar, directly facing the open kitchen, i observed how just a few of them, working hand-in-hand, totally in-synced with each other, with perfect teamwork, producing bowls after bowls of boiling hot ramen, sweating but complaining about nothing. Nowadays, i find it so difficult to find a restaurant, especially those that are packed with customers that still employ locals cooks. I guess the younger generation chose to abandon the culinary career for a so-called better paid office jobs. Therefore, more and more foreign workers were hired and trained to take up the job as a food producer. No matter how meticulous their training was, i still find a huge gap between the food prepared by them and those by the experienced ones. I sincerely hope that what i witnessed here in Tonkatsu Ramen will be made as an example to other restaurant owners and they will share the same belief as me. Let us take some time and appreciate these passionate, dedicated and hardworking chefs that still hold on to real cooking spirit, which is cooking with your heart! Thank you!

Alright, back to the topic. This restaurant's space is minimal and it can be jam packed during peak hours and customers had to queue for at least 20 minutes to get a seat. However, the turn over rate is quite high, you will be assure a table not long after. To locate it, this restaurant is situated on the Ground Floor of Bugis Village. If you are travelling from Bugis Junction or Bugis Plus, just take a left turn at the Bugis Village and it should be on your left. You can assess to Bugis by taking MRT to Bugis Station, as simple as that. I truly enjoyed by dining experience here and will definitely make a second visit whenever i return to Singapore! Have a good week ahead. xoxo.
