Jiro Shabu, USJ 10
23:41 I have always been a huge fan of hot pot. Not only i enjoy the variety of food, the warmth, the taste, but also how it brings people together over a simple meal. That's why it is also my family tradition to have a steamboat meal during chinese new year, so that all of our family members can be reunited and enjoy splendid time together. Anyway, today i am going to write about a Japanese version of hotpot, also known as shabu-shabu.
Shabu-shabu is actually a Japanese cuisine, featuring thinly sliced meat being cooked for mere seconds in a pot of boiling water. It got its name from the sound of food boiling in the hot pot. It resembles the usual steamboat but differs in presentation. Instead of a huge pot where everyone throw anything they like inside, shabu-shabu uses a more refined and hygienic way of dining by cooking using an individual pot of soup and ingredients, according to personal preference.
I was very privileged to be invited by Jiro Shabu Restaurant for a dinner at their cozy place in the business center in USJ 10. Jiro is a Japanese inspired shabu-shabu restaurant located in the center of Taipan, USJ 10. It is not easily missed as it faces the main road if you are travelling from the USJ housing area. Jiro Shabu has a very traditional Japanese restaurant ambiance, proper yet relaxing.
We were greeted warmly by Mr. Kam, the in-charged manager of Jiro Shabu and were served with a loaded course of Jiro's popular items. First of all, we were offered a huge variety of soups as the base of shabu-shabu. Jiro offers two main types of soup, mainly Japanese style and local favourite. I had Tom Yam Goong while my partner had Miso Soup. Aside from that, i also had a personal Pork Shabu set, consisting of thinly sliced pork meat, with a bowl of the usual steamboat ingredients such as fishballs, corn, mushrooms and vegetables.

1. Select a piece of the glorious pork fillet
2. Dip it into the sizzling hot pot, wait for 10 seconds. I do my own counting.
3. There you go, a perfectly cooked pork. Enjoy with some sauce or condiments or you could just eat it like that. Still fantastic anyway.
In addition to that, we were introduced to more items that Jiro prides on. Firstly, the amazingly fresh, 100% Grass Fed New Zealand Beef. Judging from the lengthy name, we can assure that Jiro knows their product well and is confident to showcase the goodness of their beef. It was certainly mesmerizing how tender and fresh their beef was. Eating together with traditional Japanese Ponzu sauce, completely elevates the taste and flavor of this protein.

Ponzu sauce: traditional Japanese sauce made out of soy sauce, vinegar, citrus and more. |
Jiro's Signature 8 Flavor Prosperity Fish Paste--RM 19.90 |
Note: Enough for 2 person, as a side dish. |

Besides the set and ala-carte menu shown above, diners can also pick the add-ons from the moving belt at the sides, just like the sushi belt in the usual Japanese restaurants. I love the idea of combining shabu-shabu with individualised sets. This concept is perfect for small eaters that want to try out all the different types of ingredients but in a small amount that is possible to stomach.
