Brew Cafe, Auto City, Juru, Penang

19:45

With the cafe culture blooming so rapidly in Malaysia, i am more than happy to see the same is happening in my hometown, Bukit Mertajam as well. This little town where i grew up from is actually a small part of mainland, Penang, with really awesome yam rice and hawker food. However, the word cafe is still a little bit new to this town as the majority population here is either senior citizens or young children. We all know why, younger generation tend to chase for their future dreams away from this small town. Nevertheless, there is this cafe that i visited a while ago that made me proud and hopeful about the cafe culture that is growing steadily in this small town.

The first thing that striked me when i stepped into this rather huge cafe is one word--WOW. I was so impressed with their rustic yet modern decor, with various different seating, be it indoor or outdoor. This is almost equivalent to what we get in KL! It was an annual meet-up with high school buddy Ms. Pee. It has been ages since i last talked to her. Since both of us were back, we went for a quick catch-up in this sensational hit cafe in Auto City. We had a cup of latte and white chocolate coffee with a slice of rum and bailey chocolate cake.

Generally speaking, i never give high expectation for coffee in Penang. No offense, but i personally think that this state is still a novice in the sense of brewing Western coffee. The bean supplies as well as technique are still in the progress of becoming excellent. Hence, i was quite pleased with Brew Cafe's coffee because it is good, smooth and fragrant. However, it still lacked the richness and unique flavor of great coffee. Latte art was not present, hence no comment on that. I find my white chocolate coffee was overly sweetened. Compared to Artisan Roast's Dolce Mocha, this cuppa needs lots of improvement. The only consolation is the amazingly moist and unqiue liquor cake. I love how moist the chocolate cake was, together with the smooth and rich chocolate mousse and strong alcohol kick, this is almost perfect. I can safely crown this cake as the best liquor cake i have ever tasted! Good job!

Lastly, a photo of us
Nevertheless, Brew Cafe is worthy of its great business and perhaps the title of the most promising cafe in mainland Penang. The decor and food menu are both the selling points here. Therefore, this is always the hot spot for people during the weekends. However, i do find the pricing here is expensive, comparing to the local market. Service was fair, staffs were not that warm nor welcoming. I am looking forward for more surprises from Brew Cafe when i return next month! xoxo
